Laurel Advocacy & Referral Services Purchased 309 Laurel Avenue

LAUREL, MD, March 13, 2024—Laurel Advocacy & Referral Services, Inc. (LARS), acquired 309 Laurel Avenue. The property, adjacent to the 311 Laurel Avenue location, allows LARS to increase capacity and service offerings to the community.

The new building will provide LARS with much needed space to begin offering onsite programming, such as life skills seminars and workforce development clinics. There have been discussions with other community organizations to host Alcoholic Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings, as well as potentially having a mini day center for unhoused people. The property also has a substantial backyard which can hold several raised beds for growing produce to supplement the LARS pantry and has ample room for up to five additional parking spaces.

“This is a terrific opportunity for LARS. The Board has been working on this for more than a year. This would not have been possible without the support of our District 21 delegation, especially Delegate Ben Barnes, who helped us secure a $500,000 capital grant,” said Sherri Dotson, LARS Board Chair.

“The Team is thrilled at the possibilities the new building brings for our clients—more ways to help them and their families,” said Shannon Mouton, Executive Director for LARS. “They [the Team] have a lot of ideas about how to use the building.”

The additional space, the expanded programs and the increased staff will require new funding, more volunteers and greater support from the community. To be a part of the expansion, go to www.laureladvocacy.org to give of your time, talent, or treasure.
